Pickaxes Guide

Pickaxes raise Power, the stat that breaks tougher eggs faster. In Break and Steal an Egg, Power shortens the vulnerable window while you left-click a shell; it does not help you outrun guards after you press E. Buy pickaxes when break time is the bottleneck. Buy and equip Trails when escape time is the bottleneck. This page lists all eighteen pickaxes, then explains purchase timing against Trails, Speed farming, and zone bands.

New players should skim getting started first. Speed specialists should keep trails and how to get Speed open while spending.

You always begin with Wooden. Early jumps (Stone, Iron, Golden) are cheap relative to later Trails and should be taken as soon as Forest/Desert shells feel sticky. Mid and late pickaxes cost as much as late Trails — schedule them like Speed-gate climbs, not impulse cosmetics.

What Power actually buys you

Higher Power means:

  • Faster breaks on the current zone’s eggs.
  • Access to shells that simply will not open on low Power in a reasonable time.
  • Shorter standing time, which reduces the chance a guard or player notices you mid-break.

Higher Power does not mean:

  • Faster sprint while carrying.
  • Free escapes from Bad routes.
  • A substitute for Index Speed claims or equipped Trails.

If you upgrade Diamond while still failing Desert chases on White Trail, you spent cash on the wrong problem.

When to buy a pickaxe vs a Trail vs Speed time

Use this rule set:

Buy the next pickaxe when eggs in your current zone take so long that guards aggro before the shell opens, or when you literally cannot crack the next band’s eggs after a legitimate unlock.

Buy and equip the next Trail when shells open fine but you lose the animal on the way to the Pen. Trails multiply treadmill Speed only while equipped — details on the trails page.

Spend time on the treadmill when you just bought a Trail, just claimed Index Speed, or just unlocked a harder zone. Cash sitting in the shop does not raise Speed by itself.

Claim free rewards first — like + favorite Speed to the right of the Trails Shop — before either major purchase path. There are no active redeem codes to bail out a bad spend order.

Early game (Forest → Desert)

  1. Free Speed claim.
  2. Wooden → Stone ($80) → Iron ($800) as Forest breaks slow you.
  3. White Trail ($500) equipped + treadmill — often before Golden.
  4. Golden ($20k) when Desert Cactus/Bones feel tanky.
  5. Blue Trail ($7.5k) interleaved whenever escapes lag Power.

Mid game (Snowy → Candy → Swamp)

Diamond ($160k), Strawberry ($1.2M), Cactus ($6M), and Lightning ($40M) line up with Rare/Epic/Legendary shells. Do not climb this ladder while ignoring Green/Purple/Red Trails. Extra Hard Candy and Insane Swamp punish slow carries even if Rainbow eggs crack quickly.

Late game (Ocean → Hell → Blossom → Galaxy)

Candy through Celestial pickaxes match Mythic → Secret shells and trillion-scale economies. Galaxy ($4Qa) and Celestial ($20Qa) sit next to Brutal Galaxy zone expectations. At this scale, a single wrong purchase delays both Power and Trail progress — decide based on the failure mode of your last five steals, not the shiny name in the shop.

These are planning guides, not hard locks. If your break time is fine two tiers early, spend on Trails. If break time is awful one tier early, buy Power before the next Recommended Speed gate on the zones list.

Cash flow tips for the pickaxe shop

  • Pen animals print the shop. Empty Pens make every row above theoretical — steal and bank first (how to steal).
  • Index Cash claims (example: Chicken 100 Cash plus 60 Speed) fund early Stone/Iron without delaying Trails. See Index rewards.
  • Merging three of the same species raises weight and income potential (pet merge), which shortens the wait for mid pickaxes.
  • Animal ranking and long-term keepers belong on the tier list as the meta firms up — Power only helps you acquire them faster.

Common pickaxe mistakes

  • Maxing Power while Trails sit unequipped in inventory.
  • Buying Strawberry/Cactus before Desert/Snowy routes are stable.
  • Ignoring free Speed because a new pickaxe “felt” like progress.
  • Unlocking Ocean on a mid pickaxe and blaming the shop when the real issue is carry Speed.
  • Saving for Celestial while dying on Hell with an outdated Trail.

Session spend script

  1. Note whether your last failures were break or escape.
  2. If break: buy the next pickaxe in the table; test on current zone eggs.
  3. If escape: buy/equip Trail; treadmill; retest steals.
  4. If both: fix escape first if you are losing animals, fix break first if shells never open.
  5. Only then consider the next zone Speed gate.

Power is a timer reduction. Speed is a survival stat. Buy pickaxes to open eggs; equip Trails to keep them. Climb the eighteen-step ladder with that split in mind and the shop stops feeling like a trap.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What pickaxe do I start with?

Wooden with Power 1. Buy Stone for $80 and Iron for $800 as soon as Forest eggs feel slow to break.

Should I buy Diamond before Blue Trail?

Only if break time is your main failure. If guards catch you after eggs open, equip the next Trail and treadmill before dumping cash into Diamond.

What is the strongest pickaxe?

Celestial costs $20Qa and grants 25B Power. It is an endgame purchase for Brutal Galaxy-level shells, not an early flex.

Do pickaxes help on the treadmill?

No. Treadmill Speed comes from equipped Trails and claims. Pickaxes only affect breaking Power.
